Spring is the best time to look around your house and take stock of what needs to be cleaned. From flooring to drapes to furniture, there are some areas of your home that are more in need of a deep clean than others. You may pay weekly attention to sanitizing your bathrooms, or wiping down your kitchen counters, but you likely neglect the state of your carpets, rugs, tile floors, and upholstery.
Truth is, your floors accumulate all manner of dirt, debris and dust mites that can’t be removed with a simple vacuuming. Add in urine stains and pet dander, and you have the perfect storm for dirty rugs and carpets that are harboring bacteria and allergens. A wise investment this spring would be to hire professionals to clean your carpets. But there are plenty of things you can do on your own to ensure clean and fresh smelling rugs, carpets, tile and upholstery.
1. Naturally Freshen Carpets With Baking Soda and Essential Oils
Add about 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice with a box of baking soda, and mix well in a separate container. Shake some of the mixture on your carpet as needed, let it sit for a few minutes, then vacuum it.
2. Fluff Your Carpets
Breathe new life into your crushed carpet fibers, particularly areas that have been stained or flattened by furniture legs. Make your own mixture of vinegar and water and spray the affected area. Blot the stain, then run a spoon along the fibers on its side to fluff them up.
3. Throw Machine Washable Rugs in the Wash
Cotton, machine washable area rugs can be thrown in the washer and dryer. Just be sure to read the manufacturer’s recommendations. If your rugs aren’t machine wash friendly, use the attachment to vacuum both sides.
4. Freshen Furniture
Have you smelled your sofas and arm chairs lately? If they’re smelling a bit funky or musty, vacuum your furniture with the upholstery brush attachment to remove odors, dust, hair and debris. Remove all cushions, beat them outside, then vacuum both sides. Sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the upholstered areas, let it sit, then vacuum it up. Try some on your pet beds, too.
5. Clean Your Grout
To get out dirt and grime from your tile grout, dab white toothpaste onto the area, scrub with a toothbrush, dampen a cloth with liquid dish soap and water, and wipe the area clean.
While these spring cleaning tips can help you freshen your flooring and upholstery, there’s nothing quite like a professional carpet cleaning to truly make your flooring healthier, safer and cleaner.
